"spam" rejection for app dating back 15-years

I have a series of 4 titles that date back 15(!) years in the app store. The games are series (like Super Mario Brothers) - where the game play is largely identical - but the levels are entirely different. 3 versions of the game share much of the source code.

I recently tried to release an update to one of them - and found my app rejected due to being "Spam."

"Guideline 4.3(a) - Design - Spam" "Specifically, this app is available in the same locations as another identical app you submitted to the App Store."

I've tried appealing - and even sent app review videos of a happy customer playing different installments of the series all-the-way-through.

I long ago gave up charging for the game (there aren't even ads). I am trying to keep them up-to-date largely because they are still popular with kids and retro-gamers.

When I expressed confusion about why now - after 15-years there is suddenly a problem - I received:

"Thank you for your reply. Please note that previous approval to the App Store does not guarantee future approvals. All apps, including updates, undergo a complete review to ensure compliance with the most current version of the App Review Guidelines."

"Before we can approve this app to the App Store, you will need to make the appropriate changes to your app to bring it into compliance."

I have been given no clear guidance on how to address this issue.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Lobby for alternative app stores.

I'd support a store called "Le Salon des Refusés".

I understand that the spam detection is pretty simple: there is a title that looks the same, but they probably don't go into details.

So, I don't if that would work, but I would advise to post a comment for reviewer in the submission where you explain what you write here. Something like this (must be simple and crystal clear):

  • There are 3 versions of this app (app-***, the one being submitted) and app-yyy and app- zzz.
  • app-yyy and app-zzz address different public, because of the level of play and feature some specific capabilities, such as …

Up to you to find a few features, which may be pretty simple, like integrated tutorial, voice messages, …

And include the same message for the other versions submissions.

Feel I should mention Apple actually selected me to visit HQ in Cupertino last summer to port this same app to Apple Vision Pro.

Wish I could understand what caused the change in attitude about my app...

what caused the change in attitude

I guess they are constantly tweaking the neural network parameters.
