iPhone only app

My app is iphone only and will not work on the ipad. However for the submission, even though my XCode "Devices" is set to iPhone, in the itunesconnect distribution, I do not see an option for making it iPhone only. Does my app need to support both?

As the guidelines note, your app _must_run on iPad in 1x/2x emulation mode.

Otherwise, no, Universal support is not mandated.

All iPhone apps can run on iPads. The iPad has sort of an iPhone emulation mode where it shows the app blown up to iPad size. Your app must be able to run in this mode on an iPad or it may be rejected.

How would this mode be set? Is it on the iPad itself?

No, it just works. If you download an iPhone-only app to an iPad, it will run in the iPhone emulation mode.
