IAP or 3rd party?

Hi, hope anyone can answer this 1 (I'm really not that great at reading legal).

I'm developing an app/platform that connects busy people to students who can do chores like shopping for these busy people.

For each connection we charge a fee to the customer.

Customers can also get a subscription which basically means they don jont have to pay the fee every time.

So are we virtual or real-world? Do we need to us eApple or 3rd party software for purcheses??? Our app definitely enables people to purchase a sevice that is ' consumed ' outside the app

as stated in

3.1.5 Goods and Services Outside of the App: If your app enables people to purchase goods or services that will be consumed outside of the app, you must use purchase methods other than in-app purchase to collect those payments, such as Apple Pay or traditional credit card entry.

Like I said...I do not speak legal....so keep it simple please 😉

Kind regards,

Floeby

Hi, Thanks for your answer as well.

Yoiu established that we only connect which is virtual so that constitues IAP.

We only had a couple more questions:

1. Does the fact that people also can sign in onto our platform from our website and put a chore on our network from there change anything (so would our app be considered a reader app, the app and site also connect to an outside database))?

2. If not, we would also like to sell subscriptions/credits from our website at a reduced rate. But are we allowed to inform our users about that outside the app through a mailing or social media??? (we know that we cannot do this from inside the app whatsoever and are not planning to).

3. Final option would be If we only sell through our website and not through the market (not the way to go, but would like to know just in case)....would this be allowed?

We are fine with the IAP route if we have to....we just want to be as informed as possible and choose correctly before we submit our app for review.

Thanks again

If you are only selling 'the connection' I do not think it changes anything. You are not a reader app. A reader app is defined in the guidelines:

  • 3.1.3(a) “Reader” Apps: Apps may allow a user to access previously purchased content or content subscriptions (specifically: magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, video, access to professional databases, VoIP, cloud storage, and approved services such as classroom management apps), provided that you agree not to directly or indirectly target iOS users to use a purchasing method other than in-app purchase, and your general communications about other purchasing methods are not designed to discourage use of in-app purchase.

2. If not, we would also like to sell subscriptions/credits from our website at a reduced rate. But are we allowed to inform our users about that outside the app through a mailing or social media??? (we know that we cannot do this from inside the app whatsoever and are not planning to).

If you are only selling 'the connection' you can't. You must use IAP.

3. Final option would be If we only sell through our website and not through the market (not the way to go, but would like to know just in case)....would this be allowed?

Huh? Again, if you are selling the connection then you are selling a digital good used within the app and you must use IAP.

My question was:

If we are selling unlimited connections or bundles of connections can we also sell them through our website (or only on our website)?

You replied: Huh? Again, if you are selling the connection then you are selling a digital good used within the app and you must use IAP.

But I can find numerous examples of digital goods being sold on websites and the same products through apps e.g. Tinder selling subscriptions and bundles of 'power-ups', Headspace selling subscription and courses. All these are sold through websites at a reduced price.

So companies are doing this and we would like to offer this as well....But are we allowed to inform our users about that outside the app through a mailing or social media???

Maybe I'm stupid, but I cannot see the 'legal' difference between a connection in Tinder and a connection in our app

We zullen een vinger aan de pols houden wat voor klanten een goede prijs is en wat zij bereid zijn te betalen.

This thread is 9 days old and has 21 replies. There are many, far more deserving questions that have received far less.

Here is my final advice to you. Live the Dream! Do what you want! Don't worry about the nay-sayers!

If Apple doesn't like your business model, I'm sure they will let you know.

The guidelines state that you must use IAP to sell something that will be used in the app to unlock functionality within the app. If you find another app doing that you may report them to Apple and help Apple enforce their guidelines - if you wish. But 'legal difference' is not the issue. The issue is getting your app approved. App Review will not approve your app if they detect you are not adhering to the guidelines.

FYI, the menaing of "We zullen een vinger aan de pols houden wat voor klanten een goede prijs is en wat zij bereid zijn te betalen" is "We will keep a finger on the pulse which is a good price for customers and what they are willing to pay".

Thanks again for your answers and time.

I'm sure we're gonna make loads more mistakes along the way...just wanna avoid a couple if we can and you helped us with that.

Also wanted to know if we can sell through our website as well as through our app...but if Tinder, Headspace and numerous others are doing it I'm sure we can

That last bit in Dutch btw was intended for another chat 😉

Thanks John also for your input.

True there are definitely more deserving ones out there.

Unfortunately, sometimes the undeserving are the ones getting the most attention....look at who's in the White House 😉

Wise words....we will definitely do that...thanks again!

Your certainty is to be admired. Admired, but perhaps not relied upon.

Don't worry...optimitisc person that's all....doesn't stop us from having a plan B....or C 😉

Were you ever able to publish your app? Did you have to use IAP given your circumstance?

IAP or 3rd party?
