System uses ~300GB

After upgrading to 10.13, my 500GB SSD is nearly full. With 10.12 i always had ~200GB free. Looking at AboutThisMac->Storage->Manage, i see "System" using up nearly 300GB. However, looking at my SSD in finder, i cannot see any folders that would sum up to this size.

Does anyone notice this as well and is there a workaround?

Had a similar issue on 10.13.1 when I deleted some files and emptied the Trash. Then Finder was still showing the wrong amount of free space. Going to 'About this mac' and clicking on 'Storage' triggered some calculation and there was the free space I expected. Now Finder also shows the correct amount.

I'm so confused why my computer uses over 300GB for system data. I thought I bought the 512 GB model so that I have some extra space to work with, instead my system data uses over half of my HD space?! What if I bought the 256 GB model?! Please let me know how to fix this, thank you.

[SOLVED] For me it was because I use homebrew and it had a 304GB log file stored in /opt/homebrew/var/log. If you use homebrew, it might be stored in a different location. I emptied that and now all is good!

So im having the same problem with my computer. but its not the cash files, logs, or time machine. so I don't know what to do.

Is their any way to fix this?

I had the same issue and found the cause was the cache stored in my video editing software. The safest way to address this was to clear the cache through the program (in my case, AfterEffects) instead of deleting directly from the ~/Library/Caches/ file.
