I have a 2020 MacBook Pro with 4 USB ports that is now out of warranty. I use it as a test machine. It was running the Sonoma Beta, and auto updated to Beta 4 back at the end of July.
The Beta 4 caused an issue with this particular laptop where plugging in or out of the USBC / Thunderbolt port caused the machine to Kernel Panic and stopped Charging.
While troubleshooting the issue, the battery was depleted, and I cannot get the machine to boot or power on.
Have tried all the normal stuff... tried some less normal stuff, and have been to Apple Store who wanted $600 for a top case replacement, or Apple Support by phone who wanted $300 for a battery replacement.
If it was clearly the software that I am supposed to be testing against, I shouldn't be held liable for charges to keep my test hardware hardware operational. This is why you have people testing the beta versions of the software.
It also appears that the latest IOS Beta has similar issues with USBC and power, and my test iPad Pro (A2379) is similarly affected. USBC Stopped working after the update, and I didn't catch the issue until after the battery was dead. Once depleted, it will not reset, reboot, or charge.
Unfortunately I have had no response to my feedback provided, and when I called developer support I was told that there was nothing they could do unless my issue was with my application. The hardware I test on is my own responsibility.
- Has anyone else had this issue with the 2020 Intel MacBook Pro, or iPad Pro?
- Does anyone know of a documented repair path to get these issues addressed without having to pay for the repairs or replacement?
- Any troubleshooting options other than charge with lid closed then open - no dice there.
- Is there someone that I can reach out to, that will discuss repair options?
