iPhone 13 Pro Max bricked on iOS 16 Beta 4

Early this morning. I woke up to my iPhone not turning on or even having my alarm go off. I have tried all the tricks in the book to get it back to life, and it is not responding; even plugging it into my M1 MacBook Pro. I am running iOS 16 beta 4 on it, and this started a few days ago when it would boot loop and then restart.

I have never seen this in a beta before. My iPhone ran the betas completely fine until beta 4. Do you know of a way to revive my iPhone?

Please let me know! Thank you!

Same phone, same beta, I had the same issue. I was able to reset the phone by briefly pushing first the up volume, then the down volume then holding the power button for 6 seconds. Upon release the Apple logo appeared and the phone booted. Didn’t have an issue again for about a week, then happened again today. Currently on iOS 16.0 (20A5358a), which I believe is beta 8. I hope Apple figures this one out before the launch next week.

Nope. I did the official iOS 16.0 release update on an iPhone 13 Pro Max that hasn't had any betas on it and woke up to a bricked phone this morning. Doing the volume button reset worked, but that's some bad juju.

I have the same phone (iPhone 13 Max Pro 512), and I'm on 16.0 (20A362). I also woke up to an unresponsive phone. ( For some reason, I thought 'bricked' meant permanently disabled - the origin coming from "my device died, its as good as a brick now." )

Fortunately for me, doing the hard-reset procedure finally did work (although it initially did not).

What happened? I went to bed with about 40%, and my phone was plugged in. Woke up, and the phone was completely unresponsive. I thought maybe it failed to charge and went completely dead but pushing the right side button didn't even give me the "please charge me" icon.

What did I do? I tried 6-7 times over 20 minutes to do the hard-reset procedure (Volume Up then Volume Down then Hold Right Side Button until the logo appears) but this didn't work. I plugged the phone in, thinking it was totally dead and wouldn't respond until it had some partial charge. After about 10 minutes, it was still responsive even though it was plugged in. I tried the hard-reset procedure two more times, and it finally woke up.

Weird thing? It had a 100% charge (i.e., it wasn't dead as I feared)

Same issue here with an iPhone 13 running latest iOS16. Woke up to a dead iPhone that wouldn't boot. After a couple of hard resets (Volume Up, Volume Down, Power) it booted back up and the battery had charge.

Should I attempt the upgrade again 16.0.2?

I have a 13 pro max and the same thing happened to me twice in two weeks. Every time I tried different buttons combo for half an hour and it'd restart. But never worked at first few attempts.

16.0.2 (20A380) Same issue here with a 13 Pro Max. Almost lost my job this morning because no alarms ever went off or anything. Thank god for this thread so I can show my boss to hopefully get out of disciplinary action.

Same, this morning I woke up to a bricked iphone 13mini for the first time since i got this phone a year ago. Pressed all the buttons nothing worked. Got me worried as it cant be the battery, it was on charge all night. Did the volume up, down reset and it worked thankfully. Seems iPhone hasn’t fixed the issue yet. I am running ios 16 (20A362)

Hi there,

You might have better luck asking this question over in Apple Support Communities run by Apple Support.

Same thing happened to me this morning!! So frustrating ! I upgraded to ios 16 yesterday. Iphone 13. I actually found this thread on my husband’s phone ‘cause mine was dead. Full charge. I got it to work eventually by the vol up/down then reset button but it took a few tries. Come on Apple, fix this!

I woke up to a bricked 13 pro today, same version of iOS 16. Mashing the reset buttons combo eventually woke it up but how in the world could Apple just miss something like this??

Un-Bricked my 13 pro max today.

Now my case may vary but here’s what went down. Verizon is my carrier. I ended up having them refresh/reset the ESIM. Then I had to remove the actual SIM card from the phone while powered off. Restarted with WI-FI on. Then turned Wi-Fi off and the world was right again. Apparently the ESIM overrides the sim now. No SIM card needed. This is what worked in my case. Check with your individual carriers before doing this as they need to push things from their end. I believe the iOS 16 has a flaw that kills specific SIM cards is the best I can gather. Highly frustrating.

I woke up to a bricked 13 Pro Max iphone after it updated overnight with iOS 16.4.1. I was reading comments and trying the volume up, down then power reset to no avail. I decided to try it one more time with the phone’s silent switch turned off (not showing orange). It worked first try. Consider moving the switch when doing a volume power button reset. Good luck🤞🏻
