Edit Metadata

Hello

forgive my beginner’s question—I urgently need to edit a database file (.fexdb), and in fact I can do so using BBEdit, but upon saving, the application to use that database (FontExplorer) no longer recognizes the file (also the icon has changed). It seems some metadata have been altered by BBEdit (I don’t even know if that is correct—is it?). Would anyone be so kind as to let me know (on a non-coder level) how to proceed?

Thanks so much

I hope you have a copy of the original file, otherwise it may be permanently damaged.

You should open the database file (.fexdb) with just TextEdit tool ; when saving take care not to accept a format change. May be the same option exists for BBEdit ?

Once again, keep a copy of the original file.

Thanks. Interesting. I tried that, and the result in fact differs from the file saved by BBEdit, however, FontExplorer now reports an ”unknown error”. But this may in fact be progress, supposing this means that FontExplorer now does recognize and read the database file, only for some reason, it is now corrupted.

BBEdit can edit any text file, even text files that are wrapped other containers, like zip file. It sounds like this really isn't a text file and you simply corrupted it. Maybe try a hex editor instead. But if you don't have really good knowledge of the exact format of the file, corruption is probably going to be your only end result.
