How to replace existing app?

We have an app that is in the kids category.

Unfortunately we have to have external links going forward and this is not allowed in kids category. Removing us from the kids category does not help as "once being in the kids category the app will always be reviewed as being in the kids category".

So we have to make a new app going forward that is not in the kids category and notify all our users to download this new app. fine.

And then I make a new app using the same code base and submit. Plan is that once approved I remove the old app and make the new one available.

But I get rejected because this is a duplicate of an already existing app.

How/what should we do?

All I did was, make the new app and used the same Bundle Identifier inside the new app. I then made a pop-up (that would only come up once) explaining the new (designed) app. Less confusion for the end user. Which, in my experience, they don't take too likely when they have to download another app and re-pay for some of the same functionality.
