Renaming Read-Only System File Big Sur 11.1

I have a mid 2014 Macbook Pro that is subject to the Random Shutdown issue and has been for some time now. This has been happening through many iterations of the Mac OS for a while now and still not fixed.

I have sourced the instructions to work through the renaming of the AppleThunderboltNHI.kext file but Big Sur 11.1 does not allow you to rename. Says it's Read-only.

I am attempting this after disabling csrutil and csrutil authenticated-root. I am restarting the machine in Recovery mode again before commencing the process of mounting disks and renaming the file.

Any ideas on how to get past this renaming? If you can't do it and get rid of that file, the random shutdowns will continue.
Having same issue and have tried also the remove the directory.

Would appreciate a fix too as totally stuck after hours of trying to solve!
As an update ...
  • I contacted Apple Support via Chat

  • They got me to add a new user (admin access) to test

  • When logged into my new tea admin user account ... the random reboot / shutdown thing doesn't happen

Also ill note that I was able to successfully rename the AppleThunderboltNHI.kext item but this did not fix the reboot issues.

Getting back onto support now that I have reinstalled Big Sur and issue still occurring in my main login

I am confused why it is only an issue with my main account ... but a new user doesn't have it ... interesting!! ... will keep you updated
