Big Sur 11.0.1 RC2 Installation Issue

Running into an issue installing Big Sur on top of Catalina 10.15.7 on 2019 Mac Pro.

Downloads the installer no problem, but after a bit running - runs into a very generic dialog with
Code Block
An error occured installing macOS.
You can try again to complete the installation.

From the console, I can see that it tries to go through some networking, and everything is successful up until bridgeOS update download.

Relevant lines seem to be:

(formatted for readability)

A bit of google searching got me thinking that there seems to be something hay-wire with T2 firmware update, but before I go nuking it on my dev machine, I am curious whether anyone else ran into this, or what likely is the culprit, when should we expect the required components be fully upgraded so the installer can download them?

Got the exact same problem with my iMac Pro with the same error 🤦‍♂️
Same issue on a 16" MBP.
Seeing this as well on a MBP 16"
I'm getting the same thing. I uninstalled everything and then repeated the steps again with the Console application open and saw this during the "C-R" in the software update pane of system settings:

Same on iMac Pro (2017)
I'll chime in with a 'me too' from multiple Mac systems (all with a T2). I was trying to go from MacOS 10.15.7 (19H15) to 11.0.1 RC2 on some test systems before GA on Thursday.

Multiple forums have users with the exact same problem, so it's clearly something Apple needs to take care of. I'm certain they're aware. :-)

I did a quick analysis of the HTTP URLs present in my install error log. Of the 76 unique URLs listed, 11 of them gave a 404 response, meaning about 1 in 7 were not found. Example (edited for clarity) of one 404: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/06/41/***/***/MRTConfigData_10_15.pkg.

This could be unrelated and normal, or it could be that the a file required for the bridge update was not found, so it could not update, and the install failed.

Pure speculation, but a reasonable possibility. If so, apple could drop the missing bits in place on the CDN, and the installers would magically start to work, maybe?
I dug deeper, and if you look at the catalog the installer is using: https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-11-10.15-10.14-10.13-10.12-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

And search for "BridgeOSPredicateProductOrdering" you can see it only lists URLs for versions:

Code Block
17.16.16610.0.0
17.16.14538.0.0
17.16.15580.0.0

You can see in the install logs where it is using this catalog to find the bridgeOS update:

It seems to me the sucatalog on Apples end needs to be updated to reflect the URL of version 18.16.12561.0.0. I found some other posts online that indicate a "revive" of T2 as per https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/apple-configurator-2/apdebea5be51/mac can resolve it, but I have yet to test this myself.
Same exact issue here on a 2019 16" MacBook Pro.

Seeing the same issue on a Mac mini 2018, going from Catalina to Big Sur RC2.
Incredibly frustrating and a huge waste of everyone's time.

Running into same issue as well on my 16” MBP
Same issue on a Mac Mini 2018 :-(
While booted into Catalina 10.15.7 running the following solved this for me:

Code Block
sudo nvram IASICatalogURL=https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.16seed-10.16-10.15-10.14-10.13-10.12-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

I was then able to proceed with the RC2 installer.
Same issue here with 2018 MacBook Pro (15-inch)
Same here on my 2018 MBP 13''
Same here, 2018 13'' MBP.., this is sad :(
Same issue on MacBook Pro 16" 2019
Same issue here with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020)
Okay ... I think it is clear now that this issue is present on multiple machines. Can we please stop the ongoing "same here"...
My install of the Beta (prior to RC 2) on Mac mini 2018 required the firmware update to be run. Update took a LOOONNNGG time, but did update the firmware during the Beta install. Currently reports this version:
System Firmware Version: 1554.50.3.0.0 (iBridge: 18.16.12561.0.0,0)
My install was a clean install onto an external drive that was freshly erased before install.

So your log in particular looks like the firmware updated didn't run. Was the install onto an external drive? There were issues with firmware updaters years ago (before Sierra?) not running when the OS install target disk was not the internal drive.

@ts85 answer fixes the issue, but they made a typo. Enter this into the Terminal prior to running the installer:

Code Block bash
sudo nvram IASUCatalogURL=https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.16seed-10.16-10.15-10.14-10.13-10.12-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

Same here with a 16" 2019 MBP - definitely seems like a T2 issue and clearing caches and other measures has no effect, this has been an issue for me since 10.15.5 and I'm still running that version as a consequence.

Different issue as the one above, but still to do with the BridgeOS update :/
