Password problem installing Big Sur beta 10

I have an Apple Silicon DTK, which I'm trying to get to grips with. I am not a full-time Mac user, and I may well be missing something "obvious". I'm also partially sighted, and find the macOS GUI somewhat baffling, like all other GUIs.

I'm currently running an older beta, 20A5299w. The Mac says Beta 10 is available, and offers to download it for me. "SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager" needs to authenticate me, and asks for a password, but doesn't say which password it wants.

The Mac is authenticating with LDAP from a Windows Active Directory. So the password I use to log in is one possibility. The other possibility is the password for my Apple ID. I've tried both of these, at least ten times each with considerable care, and it won't take either of them.

I don't know of any other relevant passwords except the admin password of the machine, which does not work either. What am I missing?

Problem solved, at least for one step. The "Install macOS Big Sur Beta 10" app was damaged. Deleting it and starting again got me a new download.
