Unable to update from Big Sur beta 1(20A5299w) to Big Sur beta 9 on DTK?

I'm trying to install the latest Big Sur beta 9 on my Developer Transition Kit (DTK) so far without success after multiple attempts. Some error messages I've gotten:
  1. Software Update: When clicking on "update now," and after authentication my username, I get a consistent "download failed" message. "An error occurred while downloading the selected updates. Please check your internet connection and try again." (I've triple checked that I'm plugged into the functioning ethernet, and WiFi)

  2. I've tried to get around this by directly downloading the "Install macOS Big Sur Beta" directly from the website. (https://developer.apple.com/download/) I'm able to install the Developer Beta Access Utility successfully, and have managed to then download the installer (Install macOS Big Sur Beta), but when I try to open the file I get an error message, "This copy of the Install macOS Big Sur Beta application is damaged, and can't be used to install macOS." I've tried redownloading/restarting/etc multiple times without success.

  3. Using another computer (running Catalina) I managed to create an bootable USB drive, but I confess I'm not certain how to boot from this drive when restarting the DTK as things are different than before.

I feel a little embarrassed as a baby developer that I can't even get the beta software properly installed on my machine. If anyone can help, I'd much appreciate it. Thank you!

Best,

Having all of the exact same issues. Maybe a restore is needed?
I'm going to give restoring a shot today--will update post as I do. ;-)
Exact same issue, and ran through the exact same steps. Got the "Install macOS Big Sur Beta" app (beta 9), but it fails when double-clicked with this alert: "This copy of the Install macOS Big Sur Beta application is damaged, and can‘t be used to install macOS."

I'd appreciate a comment from someone at Apple on how to update the DTK from 20A5299w to latest beta (currently 9), as there are all kinds of horror stories with bricked devices that I'd like to avoid (DFU modes, etc.). If there is a recommended procedure, please let us know so that we can get back to work. Thanks!

Also running Big Sur beta 1(20A5299w), also trying to update to Beta 9. Get "Download Failed. An error occurred while downloading the selected updates. Please check your internet connection and try again". [Would be great if it showed the error, wouldn't it?] Software Updates window shows "An update is available for your Mac" and shows " *macOS Big Sur Beta 9 11.0" clicking "more info" show the size is listed as 11.32GB. 100% repeatable, always fails within seconds of trying to download. I need Beta 9 because window toolbars are toast under Beta 1 and may be OK under Beta 9, and I have a lot of software to test. If anyone knows someone at Apple on the DTK team, give them a heads up that the update process of the DTK is seriously broken and is holding up progress.

Also FYI, on the left side of the Software Update screen you can see "Updates for this Mac are managed externally" with a "Details" link you can click. Doing so allows you to "Restore Defaults". Don't do it. If you do, and then try and rerun Software Updates, it tells you that your Mac is up to date and you will have to re-install the beta access utility so its scripts reset the Mac back to external update management (because, duh, your default updater only looks for released software - its the beta access that knows where to find the latest beta updates)

I took a look at the System installer log and isolated the log entries for a complete update attempt as described above. Appears to me to be a failure to find the expected update package OR a permission error. In any case, I copied my log entries from my DTK mac to a text file and have attached it.

Update: I've bricked my DTK and have spent hours today trying to restore it without success. Here's what I've done:

I've tried to follow the steps outlined in "Restoring Developer Transition Kit" but have ran into several problems along the way.

When I try to restore the DTK using Apple Configurator I get one of several errors:

1) When Apple Configurator connects with the device, it asks "Apple Configurator 2 would like to update Device Support for currently connected devices. Would you like to download and install this update now? ...etc." When I click "install" after a period of time (usually a couple minutes) I get an error message, "Installation failed. Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." I've been able to repeat this error multiple times.

2) When I try to drag the .IPSW file from the desktop of my host desktop to the device on Apple Configurator it asks me, "Do you want to install firmware version 11.0 on "Apple Controller"? (Restore/Revive/Cancel). When I choose restore, after a period of time (several minutes) I've gotten one of several error messages:
A) "This System cannot be restored on this device. Failed to create new state machine for restore [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore - 0xFB1 (4017)]"
B) "This System cannot be restored on this device. Failed to restore device in recovery mode, libusbrestore error:21 [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore - 0X15 (21)]
C) "The System cannot be restored on this device. The operation couldn't be completed. [AMRestoreErrorDomain error 10 - Failed to handle message type StatusMsg) [AMRestoreErrorDomain - 0xA (10)]
D) "They System cannot be restored on this device. Failed to copy preflight options during recovery mode restore. [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore - 0xBBC (3004)]"
  • Note*

I note that out of desperation I tried to restore my DTK while my host Mac has been running both the latest versions of Catalina, and then even installed the latest public beta of Big Sur (11.0 Beta [20A5384c]). I get similar errors messages regardless of what operating system the host Mac is running.
  • Note* I cannot locate Apple Configurator 2.13 beta 1. However I do seem to have located a released version(Version 2.13.1 (5A35)) of this software instead. I hope that doesn't affect the process, but I'm mentioning this discrepancy in case it does have an effect. I don't know where to find an alternate version of Apple Configurator as it's not available to be downloaded (in any version) at https://developer.apple.com/download/more/ like everything else.

While I am not an experienced developer, I feel that the documentation and support from Apple has not been adequate to address this situation.

Thank you for any and all suggestions of how to proceed from here. I'm feeling quite stuck.
Has anyone managed to successfully update to beta 9? I've been trying all day on a recently received DTK. Getting similar issues with "This copy of the install macOS Big Sur Beta Application is damaged, and can't be used to install macOS."
Exactly the same error(s) here. Any solutions so far?
I'm also having this issue.

I'm guessing that one workaround might be to obtain one or more intermediate updaters to, for example, update to beta 4 first.

Does anyone know were I can get hold an installer for a previous beta version?
Just tried with beta 10, same issue.
I have the same issue with beta 10 on the DTK. Adivce appreciated.
Same issue here, no updates on this?
@tpetdoctor -- did it work? Can you post an update?
Same issue for me. After weeks, no solution and no feedback from Apple?
Exact same issue as with the original poster, from beta 1 to beta 10. Please help.
