After Installing MacOS Big Sur latest beta update, My mac is showing battery service required warning in battery Icon.
A fresh instal of Catalina did not help.
This is something that should not happen and Apple should compensate everyone affected with the update.
This is very clearly an issue caused by bigsur update and yet they immorally charge us for the fixing of the problem. They’ve charged me £200 but haven’t bothered to tell me what they’ve even done with my laptop or whether it’s even fixed.
£200 to fix a laptop that ran perfectly like the day I got it and then minutes after restarting following bigsur update it’s broken - it’s not rocket science to work out what went wrong.
to charge people to fix a laptop that broke as a direct result of your incompetent software update is wrong and I’m pretty sure Apple has the legal obligation to rectify this.
anyway I suggest to speak to a solicitor for advice before paying to the repair.
The Early 2017 15" model was fine on Catalina. It had never once missed a beat. Coconut Battery said 94% and 325 cycles BEFORE upgrading to Big Sur. Four days after upgrading to Big Sur that machine got the red battery of death and sat at 1%. Dies as soon as you remove the power cable, and demands battery service. Curious thing is that Coconut Battery now says 83% battery but still 325 cycles.
The 2018 15" model lasted slightly longer. It showed the red battery, 1% and Service Recommended two days after the 2017 unit. Coconut battery says 96% battery and only 128 cycles - so this machine is like new.
Both machines are now desktops rather than laptops because they do not function without a power cable at all times.
I am absolutely disgusted with this. So much so that when my office asked if I wanted a replacement machine sent out so that I at least had a laptop, I asked for a Razer Pro 17 instead. Shame on you Apple - fix your damn software
MacBook Pro 2017
Update: After apple told me to bring my laptop in, I downgraded to Catalina and all is well. I hate that Apple is not being honest about Big Sur, its killing batteries. These MacBooks are not cheap!!!
So they ask me to bring it in for a tech to look at. First appoint is in three days but I know what they are going to say - buy a new battery. NO!
I have three days to wait so I guess I should wipe my mac and downgrade it to catalina, seems like some people have had luck with that. Unfortunately I don't have a backup to restore to. This has been a frustrating massive waste of my time.
Macbook Air 13" 2015 i7
Cycle Count 648
a few days after upgrade to macOS Big Sur 11.1, it showed the red battery, 1% and Service Recommended
I've tried following ways to fix it , and all didn't work
Refresh Install of macOS Big Sur with usb
Downgrade to macOS Catalina with cmd + R
Try macOS Big Sur beta 2 version
Macbook Pro 2017
Never had any battery problems, was holding very good charge, always kept on the optimised battery charging & manage longevity settings, never plugged in for long periods etc.
...a few days after Big Sur update, now my laptop is stuck on 1% battery, won't charge and says it needs a service. Totally useless as a laptop.
Apple, this is criminal.
I am not sure when I upgraded my OS to 11.1 but absolutely it was my worst decision in 2020.
Now I can not work without a charge and I am even afraid to shut down my laptop.
Come on, Apple. You ended up 2020 with such a big bug...
This is not a rare case and let us see how Apple will deal with it.
My MacBook Pro 2017 13" is now stuck on 1% and she is saying it is not charging.
I asked to apple store the they asked me to buy new battery!!!!!
hope new update will be released very very soon!!
After Big Sur update battery capacity dropped to 38% and MacBook is shutting down randomly if not connected to power outlet.
Brought this issue up today on a meeting and turned out 2 other MacBook owners have the same issue. One of them has 2019 MacBook.
Battery replacement may not solve the problem, since some people replaced their keyboards and batteries before upgrading to Big Sur and had the charging issue after upgrading the OS.
It is really annoying....
MBP 2016, only 91 charging cycles.
I had a long discussion and “support” with Apple support on phone (only way to get contact I have experienced) They were really trying their best, but...
Their conclusion was that the battery was defect and that I have to get a new battery. No complaint accepted (although in Norway we actually do have a 5 years complaint period according to the Consumer Act).
With the support we did “all” different start/reset and test procedures. A final test gave the status report code PPT006 (“confirming” that the battery is gone and this is not a software issue they claimed).
They claimed that the battery has been defect before the installation, but that the Big Sure software detected that the battery is defect!
Hello!, the battery, when working perfect just before the software update, was then immediately defect afterwards!! I find that illogical.
My conclusion, also after reading all the other comments, it that this seems likely to be a software issue and not a hardware problem!
Based on this, will replacing the battery solve the problem?
Has anyone done that?
Some facts about my situation :
MacBook Pro 13 2016 (2 thunderbolt port, base config)
Was successfully updated to Big Sur (Clean install) at OS launch (November). No problem. Was also updated to 11.1 at time of release. No issue.
I did a clean install, followed the instructions on Apple Support to prepare the computer to be sold. I used my Install Media from november, so it was 11.0 and not 11.1.
Battery was healthy before, 242 cycles (changed two years ago in the recall for this particular model).
Battery was at 100% before installation. Then 1% (actually, "0" according to Coconut Battery) on first Big Sur boot.
In System Report, battery condition was "normal" but at 0 mAh charge, and not charging.
Did another clean install, this time latest version of Catalina. Same issue, except now it actually tell me that the battery need service (did not tell me that in Big Sur.)
Tried SMC and PRAM.
Computer won't turn on, even when plugged in, with the power button. However, if I unplug the charging cable for some seconds and replug it, eventually it automatically boot.
Macbook Pro 13” late 2017 model with Touchbar.
Battery has only done 300 cycles.
No battery issues at all with MAC OS Mojave and Catalina.
Updated to Big Sur and my battery showed Service Recommended, it says it’s at 1% at all times. Yet my Coconut battery app shows my battery health is good.
Cannot remove the charging cable as the laptop dies instantly.
Updated to Big Sur 11.1 and still no fix.
Spoke to Apple tech and they said I’m the first to tell them this issue which I don’t believe at all, as I’ve been seeing this issue reported all over on here and other places.
A colleague of mine had the same issue - replaced his brand new battery and it did the same. This isn’t a hardware issue - it’s software. Shame on Apple for not even addressing this and fixing it.
