From the ducumentation, the purpose of making changes to the AASA file to the web server is to enable the system to verify my app clip, then it will show the app clip card if it’s able to perform the verification.

But App Store Connect won't get support for app clips until later this year, so I'm unable to set metadata about app clip card.

Does this mean that changing the AASA file at this stage is useless, and there is no effect seen ？

Right now, you should not see an effect when testing in Xcode, but adding associated domains to your AASA file are required for Test Flight and app store submission.
