iCloud appears to have destroyed my local Documents and Desktop

[edited down from my previous long-winded post]

I’m using latest Catalina beta (7).

I tried to turn on “Documents and Desktop” under System Preferences > Internet Accounts > iCloud options. It seems to have failed, and the checkbox does not stay on. It also seems to have deleted all my local files from ~/Documents and ~/Desktop, without actually moving them to iCloud. The files in iCloud drive have cloud icons and can’t be opened.

Are the files in some hidden staging area? I can’t believe the system would delete them for real without successfully uploading them to iCloud first.

If not, I hope my Time Machine backup works…

Me too!! whats wrong with the Catalina?

Please check the icloud online to check if your files are still there, for me it deleted all my files on Desktop and in Documents
You should however have a "~/Recovered\ Files" folder, inside of your users folder. For me that folder contains nothing but folders, but it should in theory have your files there.

If I go to my drive on icloud.com I see a folder structure under "Documents" and "Desktop", but there are no files.

Also there are also no recovered files in my local home directory. There is a folder there from yesterday, titled "Recovered Files – Aug 29, 2019 at 8/03/19 AM", but that's from another time, and it contains my normal iCloud files - ie, the files that were in iCloud before all this, not the Documents and Desktop that were recently deleted.

unfortunately i can not help than, i have issues with it myself as well.

for more stability i can only recommend downgrading.

It happened to me twice since last year. Some folders in the iCloud are empty.
