Anyone installed 10.15 beta in a VM?

Tried updating a Mojave VM to 10.15 beta in a VMWare Fusion (v11.1) VM, but after a while it just got stuck at the boot screen with the large Apple logo. Anyone managed to install Catalina in any form of VM?

From the responses so far, it seems that running macOS 10.15beta in a VM is not currently possible. Thanks for all the extra info everyone.

I installed it in a trial version of Parallels for Mac 14. Photos crashes, mouse dragging is not possible and I had issues with access to internet. I also installed Xcode 11 beta, but that crashes too as soon as I try to create a new playground or Xcode project. As these are the functionalities I'm interested in and they don't work, I just removed VM and Parallels.

I've been able to 'successfully' install and run 10.15 in a VirtualBox 6.0.8 VM. i.e. it boots and will run applications. However, (there's always a 'however') I cannot resize or drag any window. I am unsure if this is a 10.15 issue or something wrong with VirtualBox.

I'll wait for the next beta before actively pursuing this

I managed to install it in a Parallels VM by upgrading an existing 10.14 VM. The installation eventually got stuck, but the CPU wasn't doing anything, so I reset the VM and it successfully booted 10.15. I have not been able to do a subsequent clean install from the recovery volume yet.

Like the others are reporting, mouse dragging is not working.

On startup, it also can't connect to the network at all. I managed to get it to work by turning the network interface off and on again a couple times and resetting the VM if that didn't help... not very reliable but allowed me to proceed with my work. There's a corresponding error in dmesg, but I didn't save it.

Edit: Can also confirm Xcode crashing. Since this is due to an illegal instruction and the trace mentions Metal I'm assuming it's a VM problem and not a general problem with Xcode.

I'm also stuck at the boot screen on Fusion 10.1.3.

i've tried to install in vmware and in virtualbox.

didn't work.

i think you should install 10.15 in dual boot mode.

Same here. VMWare Fusion Professional Version 11.1.0 (13668589)

After upgrade to 10.15 Beta, stuck on boot.

I am going to try the dual boot now --> same problem

I can also confirm macOS 10.15 won't boot past the Apple logo on VMware Fusion

Same problem here ....

I'm running my host Mac with 10.14.5 (18F203).

In vmware Professional Version 11.1.0 (13668589) i have a virtual machine with macOS 10.14.5 (18F203).

I tried to Update it to macOS 10.15 Beta (Build 19A471t) But after the restart while updating I get only a black screen with a white Apple logo in the center of the screen.

Did anyone get it running? Is there a trick, or is ist simply a bug?

From the responses so far, it seems that running macOS 10.15beta in a VM is not currently possible. Thanks for all the extra info everyone.

VMWare Fusion forum entry lists a possible solution

1. Create new Fusion VM. Critical - Drag/Drop “Install macOS 10.15 Beta” into fusion. DO NOT use the “InstallESD.dmg”.

2. Choose the MacOS 10.14 profile. Next....

3. Choose customize. Change hardware profile to Windows 10 x64, and change KeyboardMouse to Windows 10. HINT: You must choose MacOS 10.14 FIRST, then change it to Windows 10 x64.

4. Start the VM. Finish Install of MacOS 10.15.

5. After install completes and reboots, VM will not boot. Shutdown VM, change hardware profile back to MacOS 10.14.

6. I had to install VMware tools twice. First, install, enable security extension, accessibility option, etc. Reboot, then install tools again. Now display driver will load.

i've tried to install in vmware. it did work but only have booting

I've installed 10.15 on Parallels Desktop 14.1.3 and the installer freezed some times but at last it could boot and run. Parallels Tools could not complete the install process which always stalled at 100%. According to other's solution, change the mouse setting to "Optimized for Games" can solve the window drag issue but I just failed to make the network connection working no matter how I set the network to WiFi or switch on/off. So it's not a solution now to run Catalina on Parallels Desktop.

It looks like someone figured out how to get it working in VMware Fusion on the VMware forums here: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/611961

I haven't tested it myself, yet, but probably will today.

There is a workaround that was posted in:

https://communities.vmware.com/thread/611961

Just note that I had to do a few different steps in order to install this properly on VMware Fusion 11.1.0 (13668589)

  1. Download macOS 10.15 (19A471t) via https://download.developer.apple.com/WWDC_2019/macOS_10.15_Developer_Beta_Access_Utility/macOSDeveloperBetaAccessUtility.dmg
  2. Use VMware Fusion and create the install medium as you would normally would by adding the Install macOS 10.15 Beta.app
  3. Select macOS 10.14 as the OS.
  4. Once you've completed all your configuration steps; do not start the VM (as it will not boot)
  5. Go back and change the OS: Settings > OS > Microsoft Windows > Windows 10 x64
  6. Change the keyboard and mouse to Windows 10 Profile
  7. Boot the VM and proceed installing macOS 10.15 (19A471t)
  8. Once the installer finishes installing macOS 10.15 (19A471t); the VM will not boot; moreover, you'll need to shutdown the VM.
  9. Here is where my steps are different than https://communities.vmware.com/thread/611961
  10. It was stated to change the OS to macOS 10.14 and the boot again; however, mine got stuck loading with 
  11. I turned the VM off and changed the OS to Other > Other 64-bit
  12. Once I did that, I booted the VM and it booted perfectly and finished the installation successfully.
  13. I also changed the keyboard layout back to macOS.
  14. Also, in Settings > General. the OS is correctly labeled as Mac OS X 10.15 (19A471t) Darwin 19.0.0
  15. I also installed VMware Tools on it.

+1 My VM also hung up with an Apple Logo under VMware Fusion. What's more: I got a warning from System Preferences that the VMware installation tools "would not be compatible with a future release" of Mac OS, presumably because it was built for 32-bit. So that was a big-time heads-up.

I actually got macOS 10.15 beta working in vmware fusion. Don't know if you fixed this at all or anything. I followed a tutorial that said to switch boot os to windows at the beginning then change it back to mac os 10.14.

I SOOOO wanted to click "This helped me" but in the end, NO DICE.

You're either on a different combination of HW + macOS + VMware, or you omitted some steps.

I followed the steps to the letter a few times, noting that on my end there are major departures in the actual behavior.

For example, at step 4, the default behavior is to boot from SCSI:0, which is the blank HDD, and really the startup device needs to be changed to SCSI:1, which is the temporary boot/install HDD, or possibly preferred, the VM needs to be rebooted to "firmware" and the second HDD needs to be chosen for booting purposes.

But anyway, I tried those added workarounds and I am still left with a white Apple logo on a black screen going NO WHERE, the same as my original attempt to upgrade Mojave in a VM using the beta PROFILE to get to Catalina. Same black screen with white Apple logo, going no where.

Still no joy. What am I missing, a la, what did you change along the way that is not noted in your steps?

This works on my environment.

I'm running my host Mac (macBook Pro 15-inch, 2018) with 10.14.5 (18F203).

In vmware Professional Version 11.1.0 (13668589)

I installed macOS 10.15 Beta (Build 19A471t) as described and it works. 🙂

I’ve been able to install it in Fusion, it works quite well for a first beta.

it’s been tough and it did require half day of trial and errors

Using VMWare Fusion 10, I was able to successfully create a new macOS 10.15 VM using the steps outlined in this blog article:

https://planetvm.net/blog/?p=64552

Additionally, I was eventually able to successfully upgrade an existing 10.14 VM to 10.15 using similar steps. However, I do admit that I had to attempt several times before I got the upgrade to work properly. I know I tried several different things, so I'm not sure which one was the "magic bullet", but I think it might have had to do with me uninstalling VMWare Tools from the VM before running the 10.15 installer.

Set the mouse (in Parallels configuration for the VM) to 'Optimize for games'. That will fix the problem with window resizing and dragging. Xcode 11 beta is unusable, however - it crashes on either creating a new project, or loading an Apple tutorial project. I'm hoping Apple fixes this, since use of Xcode was the whole reason for creating a Catalina VM in the first place.

I've been able to make network connection working changing the network card type in advanced configuration. The network card type that works for me is Realtek RTL8029AS.

Agree wiht all the above. I certainly hope someone (VMWare or Apple or both) fix this before this goes to production or my group will be running 10.14 for a long time. I"ve tried updating from Mojave, I've tried from a bootable USB drive, I've tried updating Mojave to the newest beta and then updating to Catalina. While it's reassurng to see that I am not the only person with this problem, it certainly is a bit disconcerting.

I'm running Catalina in a VirtualBox 6.0.8 VM on Mojave. I had been using Screen Sharing to connect to VM and it was fully functional, although no mouse available in the VM Window itself.

Thanks to hint I found in a VirtualBox user forum, I found that capturing a USB mouse in the VM restores full window resizing, dragging etc. It may be that a similar workaround is useful for Parallels and VMWare as well.

The mouse activity in the VM Window is no longer visible to the host OS so after some time passes your host may unexpectedly go to sleep.

Anyone installed 10.15 beta in a VM?
