@jlo11: On 7th of June 2022 Apple has announced during WWDC2022 that with iOS16 it will be possible to have background UWB ranging and hands-free interactions with UWB accessories. You can watch the full WWDC video here: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2022/10008/
It will require to be paired over Bluetooth with the UWB device, so that might be limited to some use-cases, but totally possible to trigger things whey you walk in and approach objects automatically.
