All of a sudden experiencing the same issue which has lead me to this thread. My macbook seems to definitely notice something is plugged in, because the mouse slows down when the monitor gets plugged in. What an absolute nightmare. Stuck working from home with covid and now can't even get my work done. Pulling out power cord is not working for me.
