in-app tipping

Hello!

I run a business management platform that caters to the dog walking and pet sitting industry. We're interested in allowing customers to tip through the app after their dog walking appointment is completed. I've already read through the app store guidelines about in-app tipping, but I'm trying to get some clarification.

Specifically, section 3.1.1 says "Apps may use in-app purchase currencies to enable customers to “tip” digital content providers in the app." We aren't a digital content provider. All of our billing takes place outside of the app -- we're just interested in allowing a customer to specify a tip for the dog walker that can be added once we generate and process their payment (outside of the app).

Is this specific usage exempt from in-app purchases?

Thx!

Yes.

Your customers, billed for a real world service outside your app, are, as you pointed out, not IAP digital content customers.

I'd work the (3rd party) billing to allow for tipping as part of the payment as a whole.
