I'm also assuming that your partition is called "Macintosh HD" (it will be unless you renamed it), so if it isn't you'll either have to change it yourself or let me know and I will post a different command.

Max,

Thank You for all your help.

Unfortunately the problem has not been solved.

It is still looping at boot.

I ran the command and which appeared to work.

i gave it the reboot command and it was just stuck there for a while. I had to force hardware shutdown and when i powered on the probllem persisted. I tried to run the command again but the files aren't there anymore.

By the way, yes my partion is called "Macintosh HD". It is also encrypted. So i have to go to Disk Utility first to unlock it and then type the command so it can be mounted and is read-write.

Thank You again.

Also, do you have any antivirus software installed?

Max,

There are two Kernel Diagnostics report, both with yesterdays date late at night, which makes sense cause that's when I was trying to fix the problem.

The output of the last Diagnostic Report was:

-bash-3.2# cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/" ; mkdir Unsupported ; mv Liv* Unsupported ; rm -Rf /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/var/folders/

I'll need to see the whole panic log, including the backtrace. Use cat instead of less and scroll up to the beginning to begin the select+copy.

The key line from that panic log is:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: PenCommService

That refers back to the LivescribeSmartpen.kext you already removed - from what you've said, you've removed it from /System/Library/Extensions already, but there may be a similar kext in the Application Support folder. Please post the output of:

ls -1 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Application\ Support/

or look in that folder yourself for a folder similar to "LivescribeSmartpen" - let me know what you find...

Hi Max, I'm having the exact same issue as Sudoku moto and even have the same line of code: BSD process name corresponding to current thread: PenCommService. I've deleted the Livescribe files from both locations that you mentioned. Should I try rebooting again in normal mode to see if the panic screen comes up?

Hi Elderdruid,

Yes, reboot and there's a fair chance that, having removed the files from both locations, you'll be avoid the panic. If not, could you post the new panic log that it creates. Let me know how it goes...

Actually that worked perfectly, i deleted all the Livescribe files and rebooted and it worked, cheers max!

Sudokumoto, there's a very good chance that all you have to do now to fix the issue is remove the last of the LiveScribe kexts with the following command:

rm -Rf /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Application\ Support/Livescribe

Obviously you'll have to put a sudo in front of that if you're running it from Safe Mode instead of Recovery Mode. Let me know how it goes...

Glad it's sorted for you, Elderdruid 🙂
