The download is very slow on MAS or with the links. You?

I didn't bother getting it through the MAS because I prefer to keep the installers as a backup. They delete themselves if you do it through the MAS - but not if you use the direct links.

It was pretty fast for me though using the direct links.

What is the firmware for?

It's just like any other OS X update since 10.10.2. All of them since then (both betas and public releases) have had an associated firmware update.

Was it embedded in the OSX update?

In the case of 10.11.1 betas, no. So far they are separate. If you download via MAS the 2 installers download and install together.

In the case of other OS X versions since 10.10.2, it depends how you downloaded it.

If you downloaded the full installer from the MAS or a delta or combo from https://support.apple.com/en_US/downloads then they are embedded.

If you downloaded just a delta or combo via MAS or direct links from swcdn.apple.com then they are separate but install together.

Also if you install the swcdn.apple.com versions manually it is advisable to install the firmware update first and then the os x update because only the latter one requires a restart.
