Configuration profile installation flow changes between iOS 12.1.1 and 12.1.3

Hi all,

There doesn't seem to be much around this on the forums so it would be great to get a decent answer on this as this is affecting our enterprise users.

In iOS 12.1.1 we noticed a change to the configuration profile installation flow. Previously, once you downloaded a configuration profile the OS would walk you through the installation steps until it was installed. When the 12.1.1 beta dropped we noticed that attempting to do the same thing only downloads the profile; the user has to install it manually from Settings. As this caused issues with the setup of our application we made some changes to account for it.

This went out to our users and everyone was relatively happy with it, although it was obviously not ideal. However when the release version dropped the installation flow was reverted, causing a different issue in the setup of our application. We assumed this might have been an error on Apple's part and reverted our changes, leaving the alternative flow behind just in case.

We've just noticed in the 12.1.3 beta this has been added back in again.

My questions are:

  • Why aren't there any decent release notes on this? A LOT of enterprise/managed applications depend on MDM and configuration profiles.
  • Could we have a confirmation that going forward this is going to be the installation flow for configuration profiles?
  • Regrettably I understand the changes have been made in the interest of user's security, but this is going to disrupt the use of many enterprise applications. Could there be another way we can manage this? Extra entitlements, etc?

Thanks,

Dave
