El Capitan GM Build hangs on startup

Hello, El Capitan GM was working fine until my battery drained on my 2014 11" MBA. Now unable to login as it freezes immediately after I key in the password. I have upgraded from Yosemite, FileVault is most likely enabled (unsure). I can enter recovery mode but I can't use my time machine backup as it is saying that I do not have enough space on the system.

Hi,

This is almost certainly the result of third party kernel extensions being handled badly by El Capitan's new security measures. It can be fixed through the Terminal in Recovery Mode - I'll guide you through it if you like. Two questions though:

  • Do you normally enter your password before the black screen with the Apple Logo and progress bar appears, or after?
  • Do you know if the name of your normal partition is still "Macintosh HD". If not, what's it called?

Q1 - No q2 - yes it's still the default Macibtosh HD

Hey there 🙂

Let me know if you're struggling...

-bash-3.2# cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" ; ls -1 Library/Extensions/ ; ls -1 Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox/ ; find System/Library/Extensions -ctime +2w -depth 2 ; tail -70 var/log/system.log ; find Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports -name *.panic -ctime -1w

-bash: cd: /Volumes/Macintosh HD: No such file or directory

ls: Library/Extensions/: No such file or directory

ls: Library/Application Support/VirtualBox/: No such file or directory

find: System/Library/Extensions: No such file or directory

tail: var/log/system.log: No such file or directory

find: Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports: No such file or directory

-bash-3.2#

Sorry for the delay, I'm in Australia. 🙂

Back to question 1.. -- it should be AFTER (I think). Driver boots then Apple logo appears then I click on the user account, then enter the password, and the progress bar appears then freezes there. I noticed that the guest account has already disappeared since I went to recovery mode.

No worries. Looks like you're going to have to unlock your "Macintosh HD" partition first. Please go back to the central menu and launch Disk Utility. Then select the "Macintosh HD" partition and then "unlock". After that, please repeat the long Terminal command again.

disk utility has the mount option grayed out.. i found out earlier through an attempt to restore to a time machine backup that i can unlock the partition through this way.. not sure if this changes things but after doing it via time machine heres the new result in terminal:

-bash-3.2# cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" ; ls -1 Library/Extensions/ ; ls -1 Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox/ ; find System/Library/Extensions -ctime +2w -depth 2 ; tail -70 var/log/system.log ; find Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports -name *.panic -ctime -1w

THANK YOU!!

No problem 🙂

Glad it's sorted for you.

I had a very similar problem with my 2007 Macbook pro after upgrading to El Capitan GM. Sometimes it would hang on start up, others the OS would load and freeze in the first minute or so. As it's an old computer there always seems to be something going wrong with it and until I saw this post I really thought it was done for this time. Those terminal commands brought it back to life again, seriously thank you so much!!

Hi Frazilpop,

I'm glad it helped 🙂 but read on: I first look at the kernel extensions (kexts) on a specific system, as these are what cause the problems and, then I tailor the kext removal to that system. Simply running the command list I've posted here specifically for the OP was a hit-and-miss approach - luckily you got enough of a "hit" to get your system up and going again, but you likely still have kexts on there that could cause further issues down the line. If you like, start your own thread and I'll have a look at it for you.

-Max

That would be brilliant, thank you! I'm worried I spoke too soon eariler as although the computer was up and working for an hour or so it's now crashed again so I think you're right that there's more kexts that need removing. I've started a new thread with the details here . Cheers!

Hello, I am having the same issue. When I shut down or restart, I get the apple and an empty progress bar. That's it. I have done a clean install (erased disk, reinstalled El Cap and then restored from TM) Still happens. I hac boot into recovery and have looked at the various threads. Done the "kext cleaning", still nothing. I can reinstall El Cap and use the computer as long as I never restart... BTW, have done all the usual things, NVRAM, Power Managment reset...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

a presto,
