[SFNT name] Should I use shift-jis instead of mac_roman for some specific attributes?

Hi,

I am wondering if the section a) Mac OS encodings for script code 0, smRoman miss Japanese at: http://unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/VENDORS/APPLE/Readme.txt

There is no mention about Shift-JIS when the platformID is 1, platEncID is 0 and the langage is 11 :

The font has this sfnt name:

    <namerecord nameID="1" platformID="1" platEncID="0" langID="0xb">
      FjÉCÅ[É}310
    </namerecord>

If I use mac_roman to decode this font name (which seems to be the choice when by default), I will not get the right result, but if I use the encoding mac Shift-JIS, I get Fjイーマ310.

Fonts are really not my field but I believe that in this context the 11 is a traditional Mac OS language code, corresponding to the langJapanese constant in <CarbonCore/Script.h>.

Is there any way to contact someone that their field are font?

11 only means the language. It is not related with the encoding character. Yes, we can see that 11 is japanese at Macintosh Language Codes table :https://developer.apple.com/fonts/TrueType-Reference-Manual/RM06/Chap6name.html

I wanna know which encoding is been used to decode correctly the SFNT name.

Try opening a DTS tech support incident. Make sure reference this DevForums thread in your initial request.

ps I’m not sure whether DTS will accept your question — another team within DTS supports graphics-y stuff and I’m not au fait with their policy regarding fonts — but it certainly doesn’t hurt to try.

From what I can see, I need to pay 119$ to be a member. Since I know that it will be my unique question, I can't afford that.

I am asking this question for fonttools software.

I just want to confirm how we pick up the encoding depending on the name parameter: https://github.com/fonttools/fonttools/blob/21d22ae30f88b76fab5575f5f2e882b142ee1c08/Lib/fontTools/misc/encodingTools.py#L17-L50 In my opinion, the mac documentation lack a little bit of precision about the encoding character.
