I recently returned my M1 DTK Mac Mini from the Universal Quick Start Program, but had major issues with that machine & couldn’t get it to download and run any iPad apps in the Big Sur Beta. So have not been able to test my iPhone or iPad app running in MacOS on Apple Silicon yet. And I’m not sure how I can without an M1 Mac?
I’ve received a Promo Code for much less than I paid for the M1 DTK Mac Mini because I live in the UK, so am now in a situation where I’m struggling to buy an M1 Mac as it’s twice the value of what I received for my DTK machine. I’m using a Late 2015 iMac for development, but even if I had an M1 Mac Mini I can’t connect it to the iMac to use as a display because Apple disabled Target Display Mode on the newer iMacs. So I’d have to buy a new monitor as well.
I’d like to be able to develop for Apple Silicon, but as a small independent developer, it seems to be getting expensive to develop for Apple these days and I’m struggling to keep up. I don’t really want to sell my 5K iMac to get an M1 Mac Mini or MacBook Air. Seems like a backward step.
What are other developers doing? Is everyone jumping on the Apple Silicon bandwagon?
