need file/record locking for master database

I'm establishing a Muti-user database that will be updated by lan based stations as well as many in the field. That means at the least file & record locking. What's the best solution to have this solution through Macs and iPhones ?

Is this going to take a Linux server with an SQL database or is there an apple solution ?

Can you explain more about the context here? Specifically, are these “lan based stations” going to be running an app that you develop? Or are you expect to do this using an existing app?
