Can’t update startup security policy on MacBook Pro running M1 chip

I need to modify my security policy of Disk, from the startup security utility, but when I try so to modify the options such as:
  • Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers

or
  • Allow remote management of kernel extensions and automatic software updates

Whenever I click on one of or both of these I get the following pop up after doing my credentials error:

”The operation couldn’t be completed.
(com.apple.BootPolicy.updateTagError error 11.)”

my computer:
MacBook Pro m1, 13 inch, 500Gb disk, 8Gb ram
I have disk encryption disabled.
I’m running MacOS 11.1
We’re you able to find a solution to this question? I was instructed to do this after installing my Universal Audio Apollo Twin X, and am getting the same error. Cannot use my audio interface now.
Hi Playfromthebrain, unfortunately I was not able, I thought I would get an apple response from here, but I asked 4 days ago and you are the first comment! I will have to communicate through customer service, this is ridiculous, how in the world on the new computers you can't modify such a thing??

I have the same problem, I have installed paragon ntfs on the MacBook pro M1 13inch. Was instructed to change the kernel accessibility in order for the software to work.

but there is an error changing it.
I have a similar problem. I am booting from an external SSD on my M1. When I try to change to reduced security, the password dialog pops up, I enter it, and the screen goes back to choosing which drive I want to adjust security settings on, as if it was successful. When I go back in to check, it's back to maximum security. No matter how many times I try, using any of the administrator name/passwords, it doesn't stick. I tried a wrong password and the same thing happens.

I had no problem adjusting the security on the native drive, though. Maybe that's a clue? The native drive is encrypted and the external is not encrypted.

Same problem, i boot on a external drive with all my music set up (worked perfectly like that with my previous macbook since years)
I just bought a M1 and do the same set up on external SSD, all my Vst's works but not my UAD apollo twin
They said on UAD site to change "security policy" from startup security, but impossible to change on the external bootable drive....
That mean i can't use my UAD.... Very boring !

I had the same problem with my M1 Macbook Pro but after I turned on FileVault encryption in preferences it would finally let me enable kernel extensions

Hi everyone . I’ve noticed two people here who had the same problem and couldn’t use UAD interfaces. I had it too and Here’s how I fixed it. so the issue is because on m1 macs each OS installed has its own recovery unlike Intel macs where the recovery was standard among all the OS’sz inorder to fix it . Shut down the Mac . Press and hold the power button to access the startup settings. Then hit options. This will take you to macOS recovery once you are in recovery hover over the apple logo in the menu bar and hit “STARTUP DISK” choose the one where your main OS is and restart . Then open recovery again and voila you can access “startup security utility” properly . Hopefully this helps. Have fun making music y’all

omg Aiden thank you so much you are a lifesaver!!! I was able to allow extensions now after having the same problem and following the steps you put helped and fixed the issue. Again thank you have a great life!

This happened to me today with a Google Drive for Desktop client update. Thanks Aiden for getting us past Recovery mode.
