big sur time machine backup to readynas fails now - error 112

have a macbook air 2020 that I have been backing up to a time machine hosted on a netgear readynas. been working fine for a while. now stopped. I think it stopped working around the time I upgraded to Big Sur.

I have deleted the entire time machine instance on the nas and created a new instance - same error. I can connect to the drive, enter username/password just fine. after it spins for a while, it comes back with an error - "the backup disk image - ***.macbookair.sparsebundle" could not be accessed error 112.
i have confirmed its using SMB as protocol on the nas.
tried everything ... thoughts?/suggestions?
I am facing the same issue with My Synology appliance, Did you find a solution ?
Same here with a QNAP NAS. Same config as bubbadss. Checked on QNAP forum, no success.
Here's what I get:
  1. The "***.sparsebundle" file is created in the share directory, which probably means Time Machine can access the smb shared directory.

  2. Some files are loaded in the image file, with a fresh time stamp corresponding to the time of the backup.

  3. After a few minutes, I get the dreaded "the backup image could not be accessed..."

...I wonder if it could be a timeout issue?
