Big Sur Mac Crash 4 times in the last 6 hours - 2 no-report and 2 reports

With the upgrade to Big Sur 11.0.1, my iMac Retina 4K 6-core intel core i7 has become highly unstable. Its crashed 4 times in the last 6 hours. 2 times it crashed with no report. The last 2 times I received a report. The odd thing is one time it crashed when I wasn't even using the computer. This time it crashed with Android studio open, safari open, the app store open, and amazon music playing. Otherwise, I wasn't using the computer.

I used to brag to my friends how stable and secure MacOS was. Not quite sure with this release.

Any suggestions?

I had same issue for the past 3 months. Both after and before upgrading to BigSur. I am still testing, but it would appear that in my case, OneDrive that failed to reconnect was the culprit. I removed it altogether (disconnect the account followed by removal in the applications), and so far, my mac seems to be holding up in situations where it would have already crashed. So looks like pruning those background apps which are on all the time might be a solution.

Hello, i have yesterday problem like this, can anybody help identify error?

I can tell you I solved this issue, but I can't tell you why it worked. I'll tell you anyway in case it helps; for me this was on a Late 2015 27" iMac with 3 TB fusion drive.

I experienced this issue for days or weeks at a time, often with less than 30 minutes between crashes. I ran hardware tests on my drive and RAM, I minimized my application usage, nothing seemed to reliably help. Eventually I noticed that after restarts my Finder windows in the status bar at the bottom were showing very low available HD space (e.g. 50 GB left on a 3 TB internal drive). I thought maybe swap space was an issue and would delete or move files to a Western Digital FireWire external HD when the computer rebooted. Disk space appears better now (80 GB available again), so yay! Then the iMac crashes again.

On rebooting, it now appears that there is just 50 GB or less space left. Huh. Delete, repeat, rinse. Hey, I am up to 100 GB free. Crash. Reboot. Huh, I only have 50 GB free again. I checked for crash dumps or other kinds of new big files and found nothing. And then it would crash again and I would find myself back around 50 GB disk space available. Like somehow the OS had lost track of what was free disk space and started writing swap into bad places? I have no idea. But through all this weirdness no actual data seemed to be lost.

Eventually I went through an arduous effort to find and move all the big files and directories that didn't need fusion drive-level performance until I cleared about 300+ GB of free space. Once I did that, the available disk space reports seemed to stabilize and I haven't had any crashes since then. (I also disconnected the WD FireWire 800 external HD and replaced it with a USB 3 Fantom Drive, but not sure if that's related.)

So I can't tell you why my chronic issue here stopped, but I can tell you what I did to stop it. Good luck with your issues!

Same issue.

Same issue and crash report. Using 2019 MacBookPro 13" Big Sur 11.4, Mac OS version:20F71

I'd like to pile on :)

Since I have upgraded to 11.5 beta (20G5042c) my MacBook Air has become so unstable it’s impossible to compile anything on it. Clang will crash, and then the system will panic at the earliest opportunity.

I can’t even install MacOS 12 on it, the installer breaks at the very end.

I’m pretty sure something is broken with the memory allocator, judging by what forensics I get (malloc/free inconsistencies, as others have mentioned). I assume the VM swapping mechanism is buggy. That would explain why the panics only happen when the memory gets almost full and the swapping mechanism kicks in.

Anyways. I agree that as time passes on, MacOS gets pointlessly more complex, making it more prone to bugs. It’s high time Apple focussed on the kernel design rather than touting cosmetics features so few people care about.

It would appear this is going to be one of those issues that a) just silently goes away in a future update OR b)when we've all given up and bought M1s.

the some issue since 3 week, how we can solve it ?

Facing same issue past 4 weeks. I have tried erasing the disk, reinstalling multiple times but no success so far. If anyone can help.

Same issue for me on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020). Turns off unexpectedly, but only when I'm using an external monitor.

I took it in to the Apple Store and they wiped the drive and reinstalled the OS said everything should be fine. The issue restarted same day I brought it home. This is very frustrating.

I also have same issue. crashes all the time I use on battery and put it into sleep.

MBP early 2015 13 inch, MacOS Big Sur 11.4 How to solve it? Any idea?

this was not fixed still after 7-8 months?

I bought a brand new iMac 27" 2020 i7 back in May and right out of the box it started to crash, I spent about 3 weeks chatting on a daily basis with apple support. I even tried reverting back to previous OS Catalina, was still crashing. Eventually they told me to pack the computer and they'd send me a new one, which I did.. took about 3 weeks before the new one crashed again. Twice since last week but still a pain, it's making work pretty stressful!

I was having daily crashes on my MBP 16 2019 with no external devices connected. My IT suggested I do a NVRAM and SMC reset and then no more kernel panic for many days now. The panic I was getting was a watchdog triggered panic in kernel_task. I would never believe when they tell you to do the NVRAM and SMC reset but in this case it worked! Note that NVRAM and SMC reset are 2 different procedures to follow. Make sure to do them correctly based on the type of device that you have (if you have Touch ID and T2 security chip, etc)

Big Sur Mac Crash 4 times in the last 6 hours - 2 no-report and 2 reports
