AirPlay Issues Since Switching to Big Sur on MacBook Pro

AirPlay seems to have been wiped out on my MacBook Pro since the move to Big Sur...The icon was no longer saved in the toolbar, so I went to the widgets to find it. Instead of saying "AirPlay" there was "Screen Mirroring" which was odd since screenshots online from other users still shows AirPlay. AirPlay worked just fine on my MacBook Pro before using Big Sur and it still works perfectly on both Apple TVs I have when I use my iPhone. This leads me to believe it might have to do with the upgrade since only my MacBook Pro is having this issue.

I ended up calling Apple Support and spent over 3 hours troubleshooting the issue, but no solution yet. Spoke to 3 different techs and it seems like none of them have seen this issue before. I've been patient since I know Big Sur is new, but this is a bit frustrating to say the least. I've restarted my router, both Apple TVs, my MacBook Pro (multiple times each), and still no fix. The screen mirroring does not work, since the AirPlay display in System Preferences keeps switching to "Off" immediately after clicking which Apple TV I want to use it for. I've also made sure the network names match up, so I'm running out of ideas.

Does anyone have any advice? I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.

I had the same issue but it got resolved as soon I disabled "Block all Incoming Connections" in the firewall settings. If you have enabled this before, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall Options. Uncheck "Block all Incoming Connections".
On the Mac the top RIGHT

[x left x] of the menu bar next to the Magnifier glass/Search button there are two bars one looks like it is "slid to on" and the other looks "slid to off." Click on that and it will drop down a box with multiple options like wifi bluetooth etc.

On the right hand side of this box is a button called Screen Mirroring. Click on that and when you do it will bring up the old Airplay looking box. The LG TV should appear in there if the TV set up is correctly (or any airplay capable device). Make sure to choose the correct mirror monitor or use as separate display.

Hope this helps, hate that they changed the name and functionality so drastically. But I guess that is "progress."

having same issue.... did you get it resolved???????
having same issues. it will show my screensaver and I can hear what I want to mirror... but it is not mirroring

its not apple tv its got to be bigsur.... my iphone will mirror but my macbook air will only show my screensaver and I can hear what I am trying to mirror but not see it. very frustrating. you cannot not get any help from Apple... had trouble with Apple music family sharing for years.... still not resolved

Macbook Pro-M1 is able to connect to the TV via Screen Mirroring but once the connection is established, the screen does not display my mac. My MBP never displays anything on the TV even though it appears to be connected. If I choose to extend the desktop, I can time the mouse off screen which indicates that the MBP thinks it is casting to the TV. Using a Macbook Pro-M1 running MacOS 11.1 and trying to use screen mirroring to a Samsung TV with ScreenBeam enabled. Based on all the other comments, it definitely seems to be an issue on the Mac side, whether it's OS (Big Sur) or hardware (M1 Chip). This is a big issue for me as it impacts my work. If it can't be fixed soon, I will have to return my new Mac.
I have experienced the same loss of airplay or screen mirroring from my Mac Pro since the Big Sur upgrade. This issue was just resolved with today’s recent Apple TV update was made available. Update your TV or Apple box and the problem will be solved or it was for me!
Yeah! The Apple TV upgrade solved this for me.
I was initially excited that my laptop upgraded to a new version of Big Sur. I then checked both Apple TVs to make sure the are up to date (which they are). Unfortunately, I am having the same exact issue as before. The AirPlay issue is still not present on my MacBook Pro. Instead it is just Screen Mirroring, which doesn't even work. As stated before, my iPhone continues to work just fine with AirPlay. I really hope Apple can fix this soon because it has been a long time and these devices are supposed to work pretty seamlessly together.
Both my macbook and my apple TV are up to date. I do not have an antivirus installed. Airplay works but screen mirroring does not. Screen mirroring does work on my iphone. When I downgraded my macbook to catalina, the screen mirroring problem resolves. However this is not a good solution to the problem.

I had the same issue with my Samsung Tv. I solved it by going to settings -> sharing -> Media sharing - enable and in right panel choose home sharing. Now try click on screen sharing and TV (Must be open) will listed in devices. Good luck

Since updating to BigSur, my airplay (screen mirroring) simply logs me out of my MacBook user account and closes all browsers. I will have to log back in and re-open all the apps I was using. Then, I will simply have to reselect screen mirroring and it will work just fine.

@TheCallaways1230, did you find a fix? I have the same issue

@TheCallaways1230, @FnRoy having the same issue too with about 5 different devices. Did you happen to find a fix?

I had the same problem when streaming Home Movies to Apple TV from a Mac.

I found a fix: Under Settings ~ Security & Privacy ~ Firewall ~ Advanced is a setting that automatically logs you out after a specified period of activity.

Mine was set to 60 minutes.
