Data in document directory

Unlike how data in the cache directory, where the system may delete the Caches/ directory to free up disk space, does it also do the same for data in documents directory?

Cause if that's the situation then what other alternatives can I use to store pdfs?

does \[the system automatically reclaim space from\] data in documents directory?

No.

You didn’t mention what platform you’re targeting here, and there is one platform-specific oddity, namely that tvOS doesn’t have a good on-device place to store large amounts of data.
