Widget preview failed to load in 15 seconds

I'm trying to use the code provided with Widgets Code-along part 1 but despite following the steps to the letter, Xcode is not showing me the widget preview. The error message is 'The app "Emoji Rangers.app" did not launch on "iPhone SE (1st generation)" in 15 seconds'. Since I need Xcode working solidly on my current development machine I have only got this mid-2012 machine to install the Xcode 12.0 beta on. Is it simply too slow to be able to run Swift previews or is there a way around it?
