Time Machine not performing backups

Time Machine preferences indicate next backup is at 09:00 but at 09:00, it switches to 10:00 & never performs a backup. Also, the backup device (G|Drive evRaW) blinks rhythmically & constantly like it's actually doing something however checking the drive with finder only shows backups created manully (Backup Now option).
Is anybody else seeing this phoenomena?

I have a similar problem. I backup to a Synology NAS, and I only noticed it wasn't backing up at all until I was on vacation and a popup comes up that said "You haven't backed up in 10 days." I go into the Time Machine System Preferences a few times, and it's always stuck on "Preparing backup."

Okay, so I ended up "Skipping Backup" a few times in the past week or so via the menu bar icon, and my Mac is now backing up.
