It definitely is a Metal compiler problem and we ran into something very similar. In our CI I see iPhone XR, XS Max as well as 6+ and 7+ failing with our ArgumentBuffer. I opened a bug report but Apple have yet to respond. I really hope they fix it before the final XCode15 release..
I agree with everything you said, and I think it goes for XCode in general. Never had I worked with an IDE which I have had to learn to assume that it is wrong when it shows me compilation errors and warnings so very often.
