Maybe I'm missing something, but can't you make a WidgetKit widget that doesn't open the container app? If so, I feel this really restricts the kinds of widgets that can be made (such as controlling non-HomeKit-enabled smart home devices, etc). It then seems widgets are only really good for presenting information, rather than allowing control.
I notice that you can add a widget to your home screen for the Shortcuts app which in fact does not launch any app when interacted with. Is this functionality exposed to us developers somehow, or are Apple keeping this to themselves?
