I managed to put the device into operation.
Regarding Ethernet, I
had to create a new "Service" in Network Preferences for "USB
10/100/1000 LAN". It was not showing up, only the Thunderbolt Bridge was
showing up.
Regarding the USB ports, I rebooted and unplugged / plugged the usb cables.
Everything now seems to be working.
