@kat4876543: it’s not a glitch - it’s something Apple has done intentionally. The logic is that if you’re wearing your watch, then you don’t need the alerts on your phone as well. So when you watch is locked - sound alerts go to your phone and not your watch. When your watch is unlocked, sound alerts go to the watch and NOT the phone, regardless of the notification settings.
Apple created this update a few iOS’s ago and it is a terrible idea. Better to give the users the ability to choose.

@Sunny_Apple - I have tried asking it of Apple Support and they gave up trying to find a resolution as I didn’t have a secondary phone so they weren’t able to test much being as I was using the phone in question and being as the fault only seems to appear when the phone is locked (and you can’t be actively using the phone whilst it is locked) they gave up. The ticket is still open though.
@Big_Worm - not a great solution for those of us who have Bluetooth on for medical reasons.
whilst this ‘solution’ does work, it is not the solution I imagine most Apple users are looking for. No ear buds, no carplay, no speakers, no watch and in my case No insulin pump.
Thanks for the heads up. I have medical alerts that go through to my phone so until Apple fixes this issue (I’ve formally reported it as well) I will have automatic updates off. I need my medical alerts active!
Mine isn't on mute (I toggle that switch a lot) so I'm happy that you now have sounds back. Unfortunately for me, even without the 'mute' switch on and mute being switched off manually on my phone - it has not resolved the muting of notifications issue. But thank you for your enthusiasm :D
@AB1217 - I actually use the wrist detection to monitor my health tracking (heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep and other activity settings) - so turning this setting off is not a brilliant solution unfortunately. It does resolve the muting of notifications though. Hopefully Apple Support will find the issue and fix it in the 15.4 iso update.
Hi Kg7 - this didn't work for me. I don't use Attention Aware Features - so I turned them on, then turned them off again and it did not alter the notifications being on some sort of forced mute when the screen is locked.
Still having the same problems on 15.3
This has not worked for me, unfortunately. I'm running ios 15.3 and have had muted lockscreen notifications since I upgraded to ios 15. Only applicable to messenger apps and Messages (whatsapp, Messenger, etc) - but does not include phone calls through messenger apps ie Skype and FB Messenger.
