APFS DMG from Disk Utility doesn't open on El Capitan

Hi,

If I make a DMG on High Sierra using the Disk Utility gui, as

- Image from Folder

- Image Format: compressed

the DMG file format defaults to APFS and won't open on El Capitan (but does open on Sierra). It gives the error "no mountable file systems."

If I select

- Image Format: hybrid image (HFS+/ISO/UDF)

the DMG file format is Mac OS Extended and does open on El Capitan, but there is no compression.

Has anyone else seen this? Seems like yet another way to push everyone/everything to APFS.

I can get El Capitan compatibility and compression by using the command line

hdiutil temp.dmg -srcfolder "My folder" -fs HFS+

Edit: to the moderator who rejected this the first time... can you please explain why? This is developer related. I build apps and distributed them as a DMG. With the High Sierra update, the creation of DMG's (using Disk Utility) appears to have broken this method of distribution for customers on macOS prior to Sierra.

Cheers,

Michael

You might have better luck asking this question over in Apple Support Communities, run by AppleCare, where you’re more likely to find folks with Mac APFS experience.
