How can I make a HomeKit enabled chicken coop door opener?

I'm getting chickens and I thought this might be a fun project for me! Essentially what I'd like to create is an electronic HomeKit enabled chicken coop door opener and closer so that I can remotely open and close the coop from in the house and also schedule it if necessary.

This is a popular product but it's very expensive and doesn't support HomeKit.

It'll need to work with a guillotine style door so would need to be a pull cord system. Where do I start? I know nothing about electronics or HomeKit so any pointers would be appreciated!

Making your own hardware involves Apple's Homekit Accessory Protocal.

HAP, intended to help an accessory communicate with Apple's HomeKit, has two faces - commercial and non-commercial.

- In the case of commercial use, a manufacturer would have their own implementation w/their own (MFi licensed) products.

- In the case of non-commercial, an individual would use that version HAP with their DIY accessory/hardware, not intended for commercial distribution.

Good luck.
