Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
Gojirahertz Oct 3, 2017 11:35 AM (in response to Hamdanuk)I am also having a hard time figuring out whether WebRTC is supported in WKWebViews in iOS 11.
From my research, it is clear that WebRTC is supported on Safari (which is built on top of WebKit) in iOS 11!
However it seems like one of the following scenarios could be true:
- WebKit itself supports WebRTC. Safari is built on top of WebKit and uses WebKit to support WebRTC. WKWebView (which is built on top of WebKit) does not support WebRTC.
- WebKit itself does not support WebRTC. Safari supports WebRTC.
Some clarification or pointers to relevant documentation that I might have missed would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
eskimo Oct 4, 2017 6:00 AM (in response to Gojirahertz)I asked about this internally and the answer is that, right now, WebRTC is only supported in Safari. No WKWebView, not even SFSafariViewController.
As always, if this is something you’d like to see added, you should file an enhancement request describing your requirements. I’d appreciate at least one of you posting a bug number, just so Future Quinn™ has a thread on which to pull if this comes up again.

Gojirahertz Nov 10, 2017 10:50 AM (in response to eskimo)Is WebRTC support in the works for app publishers(i.e. support in a WKWebView or SFSafariViewController)? Is there any timeline for when we should expect to see WebRTC support?

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
dev_hager Nov 20, 2017 1:39 AM (in response to eskimo)Hello Eskimo,
Knowing when (or at least if in 2018) WebRTC will be usable in a WKWebView could save us from taking technical decisions that would lead us to meaningless efforts in months.
I understand you cannot tell us about your plans, but a little hint could be very helpful for many of us.
Best Regards,

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
eskimo Nov 20, 2017 4:50 AM (in response to dev_hager)I’m sorry but I can’t comment on this issue specifically.
My general advice is that you target the OS that’s shipping today. Big features are typically added in major OS releases, which means that you have to a) wait for that OS release, and b) wait for your app’s deployment target to ‘pass’ that OS release.
Consider
WKWebsiteDataStore
, a nice addition that we made in iOS 9. Most iOS developers maintain compatibility with the “current minus one” iOS release, so they won’t be able to rely onWKWebsiteDataStore
until they drop support for iOS 9, which is around about now.Share and Enjoy

Allowing WebRTC within a WKWebView allows for some pretty cool possibilities.

marklynch Nov 2, 2017 10:03 PM (in response to Hamdanuk)Adding a vote to this as this is something that we are looking for too. We're delighted with the Safari support for WebRTC as it allows our solution to work on iPad and iPhones, but many of our custmers would like to use it embedded within applications.
For reference - here is a demo page that shows this functionality: https://demos.learnosity.com/assessment/questions/audio_advanced.php

abross86 Nov 12, 2018 6:05 AM (in response to Hamdanuk)Apple, please add WebRTC support in webview. We're on iOS 12.1 now and it's still not supported. Is there a reason this is not being implemented (security or otherwise)?

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
BillyQuatro Jan 29, 2019 10:54 AM (in response to ekiny)Come on, Apple. This is in very high demand and is stopping me in my tracks as far as the iPhone app. The android app is so simple and works fine. Enable WkWebview getUserMedia asap. You don't want android to become the more advanced phone app-wise because apps were limited in iOS.

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
eskimo Jan 30, 2019 2:25 AM (in response to Hamdanuk)I just want to reiterate the advice from my first post on this thread: If this is something you’d like to see added, you should file an enhancement request describing your requirements. These bugs will likely be dup’d to the the ‘lead’ bug here (r. 29281220), but they will help WebKit engineering get a better understanding about the level of demand.

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
stephane_magnenat Mar 4, 2019 8:22 AM (in response to eskimo)I followed your advise and created yet another bug about the same topic (https://bugreport.apple.com/web/?problemID=48562221).
It would be very helpful to have an answer and a roadmap. This issue blocks a whole set of web-based applications which would be possible otherwise. Moreover, it is about a piece of web standard that is disabled on one of the major web platform. That situation creates a huge uncertainty for any developer who plans to invest using HTML5-based video or audio capture for their product. This leaves the developers in a frustrating and powerless state.

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
weekesy Mar 14, 2019 4:55 PM (in response to eskimo)Have created another enhancement request for this (https://bugreport.apple.com/web/?problemID=48908350).
This seems like a pretty sought after API which allows beautiful and powerful applications to be written. No idea why Apple would want to shut that down. A roadmap and answer would be helpful to our business indeed.

I created a enhanced request under the ticket : https://bugreport.apple.com/web/?problemID=49062369
I don't understand why not to handle such a useful feature.
Hope that would be fixed soon.
So nobody has some kind of workaround to make it work ?

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
UmbreonHugs May 3, 2019 4:18 PM (in response to Hamdanuk)I would like to know the ETA or some form of update on when WebRTC will be supported on WKWebView. The WKWebView is used on a lot of popular UI frameworks, like React Native. We would love to see at least some form of update, or an answer on when this functionality will be implemented. This issue is a blocker on us, as a result we are unable to release the iOS version of our app. There are a lot of developers out there waiting for this issue to be fixed.

Re: Does iOS 11 WKWebView support WebRTC ?
jonprescott Aug 8, 2019 1:19 PM (in response to Tinnie Lam)As pointed out in few earlier replies from Eskimo (Apple Developer Relations representative), if you want it, you need to make a feature request, in Feedback Assistant, which you can get to by the "Report Bugs" link at the bottom of this page. The more the reports, the more attention it seems to get within Apple engineering. As I understand it, Apple engineers seldom frequent these forums, and Apple management (those that allocate resources to problems), frequent these forums even less. All you are doing is ranting at your fellow developers, who, by the way, most likely agree with you, and have agreed with you for a long time, based on the length of this thread. As far as an ETA is concerned, Apple will let you know when Apple lets you know. They don't usually divulge their plans except within Apple events such as WWDC and the like. Like always, develop according to what the state of the system is today, and what has been officially divulged by Apple at WWDC, et al.
