Can't backup my Photos from iCloud on an external hard drive

I have bought a while ago an external hard drive from Western Digitial. The model is called My Book and the storage option is 3TB. Yesterday when i tried to drag and drop photos onto the MyBook they simply would't copy after I tried drag and drop. I tried a couple of times and I may think the problem lies in the OS especially the drag & drop function. Has anyone encountered the same problem?

I don't think I can convert the external drive to APFS because it's not SSD.

I looked it up and I convert my external drive to APFS. It’s optimized for SSD drives but i need a place to backup my photos and other stuff. So thanks for the help! 🙂

I converted the external drive to APFS and it works! I copied all my stuff from my Macbook onto the external drive and it worked really good! So now both drives are APFS! You're question has made me think that in order for the copying to function both drives need to be APFS! Thanks again!
