Backend Options?

Hello

What are all the backend options we can use with ResearchKit?

Hi Adam,

Sage Bionetworks is a non-profit biomedical research institution that has been active in many of the Research Kit studies, although we are not affiliated with or supported by Apple. We have designed a back-end service called Bridge Server to collect data from RK apps, manage records of consent, and redistribute data to research team. This is how all 5 of the initial Research Kit apps are supported, as well as the recently-launch Mole Mapper app.

Bridge server is an open source project. However, Sage's focus for the initial launch of Research Kit has been for Sage to host the service and be responsible for continued operation and development of the service. Sage is expanding the use of our hosted service to more studies, as well as partnering in other ways with groups designing mobile health studies; if this is something that is of interest to you please contact us at bridge.info@sagebase.org. Standing up your own instance of the server is also possible but challenging, as we haven't been focused on supporting a turnkey server installation. However, we have had reports of other groups taking this route without our direct support.

When you create a ResearchKit app you determine what the backend is and therefore where the data collected goes. So, you can use whatever backend you like by either creating your own or using an existing one. Apple does not collect or store any of the data collected through ResearchKit apps.
