Cocoa pod terminal problem

Hi, I have a problem with terminal trying to download cocoa pods, whenever I try the usual command:

pod init

it comes up with the error: [!] No Xcode project found, please specify one, and it just wouldn't work, I had a lot of trouble installing cocoa pods and I would appreciate it.
