Emoji Display Problem in iOS Mail

I'm getting ready to implement a real estate site that will email users updates for the searches they save. When I test the update emails which contain emoji unicodes in the email preheader the emojis display when received in desktop and mobile versions of Gmail and Outlook and the desktop version of Apple Mail. However, they appear as question marks in a square in Mail on an iPhone 6S, iPhone 5 and iPad.

I have tried using both the decimal and hexadecimal unicodes for the emojis. The problem is the same for both. The problem is also the same for Gmail, iCloud and other email accounts viewed in iOS Mail. The iPhones and the iPad have all updates. Mail preview for all is set to 2 lines which is enough for the entire preheader content.

I see emojis displayed in the subject line of other emails in Mail on the 3 iOS devices, but I don't have the option of putting emoji unicodes in the subject line of my emails since the real estate system I am using will strip them out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
