Best microphone/setup for ambient/omnidirectional recording

My app is (foreground, of course) listening for a particular waveform (which encodes digital data). Nobody knows when or where this waveform will occur.

I notice (https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/251930/wheres-iphone-7-microphone-located) that the iPhone7 has 4 microphones.
I also notice (https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/qa/qa1799/_index.html) that it is possible to select a particular microphone.

However, I see no clear strategy for setting up an optimal configuration for recording for my purpose. I wish to avoid any kind of 'beamforming' etc. that might consider the signal as straight ambient noise on account of its direction relative to the device.

I believe my best option will likely be to use the microphone on the back (flashlight) side of the device.

I would welcome any feedback on this matter.
