Will the eGPU kit power the built-in display?

Hello,

I'm looking into purchasing an eGPU for my MacBook Pro (15" w/ Touchbar). But since I will use it for gaming, will the eGPU even power the built-in display? There's conflicting information online. I contacted Apple Support and they said it would drive the built-in display where YouTube videos online say that you must use an external display to benefit from the eGPU while gaming. Please let me know.

An eGPU can be used by apps rendering on the default display, but the app must explicitly opt-in to this. So older apps probably won't.

Also, if an exteral display is directly connected to the eGPU rendering to that display is more efficient than to other displays (such as the internal display)
