Same problem.. found the solution at below discussion. it was SoundControl that was causing the issue for me. had uninstalled the app, but the driver was stuck.. also caused slow browsing. all issues resolved after removing the driver..

Yes, the cause is deamon CoreAudio

I have sound preferences Late 2015 5K iMac.

Any ideas on how to fix? I've searched the forums and online fixes to no avail.

Try to make a SMC-Reset and a PRAM-Reset, or try to reinstall the Developer-Preview, make a Clean Install...?

true, reset will be fine

No luck for me.

I tried the SCM and PRAM but no sound

Same for me still on Beta 2. No sound and sound preferences won't load. Ugh. Would love to have a fix for this.

I had Sound Preferences again onlyafter clean Mojave install

Has anyone got a fix for this?

Yep...that was the culprit. For those having a similar issue...

Select "Go to Folder"... /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/

Remove _SoundControl.driver folder. Log out and back in to resolve the sound issue!
