Is Instruments 9.3 crashing apps for anyone else?

When I run my App with xCode all loads and runs fine. When I load in Instruments and press record using a profiling template of Activity Monitor or Allocations it loads and runs fine. However if I use Zombies or Leaks the app crashes instantly. I dont even get to see it. I then access the crash logs in xcode and thought the reason for the crash is

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Its almost impossible to debug as wach report is different.

So I stop calling the line

StoreManager.getProductIdentifiersFromServer()

which stops the subsequent calls to

JSONParser.jsonURL(_:jsonType:)

Then the app crashes

Does not seem to matter what functions I do or do not call I get a crash. It seems to me that its a system call and not one that I make thats causing the crash. Is it just me or is Instruments 9.3 crashing on Zombies and Or Leaks for anyone else?

Replies

Yup instruments are not working as expected, especially when working on a real device.

What's work for me is to reindex the the spotlight

sudo mdutil -E /

I dunno how it's related but it's fixed the problem

I'm seeing the very same issue with the release build of xcode 9.3 ... Activity Monitor or Allocations work but Leaks crashes. Were you able to resolve it?

Thanks!

Same here. Activity, Allocations and SceneKit working fine. But app crashes with Leaks and Zombies. Noticed that this was posted in beta section of the forum... would it receive more attention somewhere else? Any progress / movement on this issue?

Thanks, Dave

We see a similar crash happen when running the Xcode 9.3 Allocations instrument with the "Record reference counts" option enabled (simulator and device).

The app can be profiled, though, when the "Record reference counts" option is not enabled.

I"m also having the same issue with Xcode 9.3 and both the leak inspector and zombie instrument. My app instantly crashes on load in Instruments, and if I first run the app in debug mode in Xcode and then switch to Instruments, any interaction with my app while it's being inspected by the leak or zombie instrument causes my app to crash. Looking through the crash reports hasn't helped much as they are happening in all sorts of random locations in my code that you wouldn't otherwise expect a crash.

I have notice this is only occuring with apps that are completely written in Swift. I have some other apps that are a mixture of Swift and Obj-C, with the app lauching into Obj-C based code at first. In these apps, I get an instant crash when attempting to load a view/viewcontroller that was created using Swift. I'm not sure if this is exactly the problem, but it does seem like an interesting observation that can hopefully help isolate the issue.

I have the same issue on Core Animation FPS

Same here. Cant figure out what the crash is about.

This helped for me. It took me a few minutes to find the setting...

After setting up the Leaks instrument but before beginning recording, go to "File" > "Recording Options..." (⌘⌥R) and it will be a checkbox there.

I'm also seeing this issue in Xcode 9.3. It's really annoying. The "Record Reference Counts" fix works for me, but it feels like this shouldn't be necessary (and also, the setting doesn't seem to persist for future launches of Instruments).

It seems that Xcode 9.4 doesn't solve this.

I disabled "Record Reference Counts", and Instruments showed way more leaks than usual.

Anyone same here?

Instruments crashes for me as well - Time Profiler, Allocations, whatever. I'm using Xcode 9.3 and there's no option "Record Reference Counts" anymore.

Thank you sir!
