How to pull bar button items closer together.

I have bar button items on the navigation bar of a navigation controller showing images instead of text. They are too far apart from each other. How do I pull them closer to each other? I have put a short string literal in the possibleTitles property of each bar button item. That doesn't seem to do anything.
