You may not install to this volume as it has legacy FileVault users

Attempting to install MacOS High Sierra and I'm seeing this error.

"You may not install to this volume as it has legacy FileVault users"

I've never used FileVault, so this is a strange error.

Any thoughts?

I solved this. I still had old Sonos application on my computer from way back when I had a Sonos speaker.

After I did a completed uninstall of the Sonos application (using CleanMyMac 3 to help make sure all the files were gone or any other similar app) I relaunched the 10.13 installer and it allowed me to continue.

Hello same issues with a Mac Pro 2013,

cancel all account form login an leave only admin account, restart again and procede.

Solved

Had the same issue.

This is due to having used FileVault (1) the predecessor for FileVault2. This was done on a per-user basis.

One or another user on your system still has a sparsebundle made for this.

To find it expand /Users in the Finder for all users. The offending ones will have a file named

/Users/name/name.sparsebundle

For each of these users log into their account, and turn off FileVault from the Settings>Security&Privacy>Filevault pane.

When done, you can just go back and rerun the OS High Sierra installer.
